THINGS TO DO

Gaston Street

Many locals call it the most beautiful street in downtown Savannah (yes, even better than Jones Street nearby) – you could spend a few hours just wandering around this historic and picturesque street that’s dripping with history and charm.

Forsyth Park

This majestic 30-acre park named for Georgia’s 33rd governor has it all! Sometimes the stroll to the fountain is dotted with local artisans working to the sounds of a lively trumpet, and on quieter days it’s just the locals out with their dogs, avid readers nestled deep in their comfy hammocks and art students sketching their surroundings from a nearby bench.

Mercer Williams House Museum

The Mercer-Williams House was designed by New York architect John S. Norris for General Hugh W. Mercer, great-grandfather of celebrated songwriter Johnny Mercer. Construction began in 1860 and was subsequently interrupted by the Civil War. It was eventually completed in 1868, after General Mercer sold the unfinished structure to John R. Wilder.

Massie Heritage Center

For nearly four decades, the Massie Heritage Center has provided interpretive programs both inside the facility with educational exhibits and outside on the streets and squares of Savannah’s downtown historic district. Program topics have included: local history, architecture, city planning, character education, the history of public schools, and heritage education.

The Armstrong House

The Armstrong house is a 100 year old, four story mansion built in a beautifully restored Italian Renaissance style. With sprawling porches and a large grand entrance, it’s not to be missed.

The Cathedral of St. John the Baptist

French Catholic émigrés established Savannah’s first parish, called the Congrégation de Saint Jean-Baptiste, shortly before the end of the 18th century.

City Market

City Market has established itself as a destination for entertainment, dining, art and retail in downtown Savannah. To create an anchor attraction that would attract both travelers and Savannah residents, the developer emulated its successful Torpedo Factory project in Alexandria, Virginia and established the Art Center at City Market. Savannah City Market stretches a full block in each direction, with Ellis Square to the east and Franklin Square to the west, from Bryan (North) to Congress (South).

Mrs. Wilkes Dining Room

A line gathers each morning at 107 West Jones Street. At 11 o’clock, the doors of 107 open and the lunch crowd finds seats at one of the large tables-for-ten shared by strangers. Tabletops are crowded with platters of fried chicken and cornbread dressing, sweet potato souffle, black-eyed peas, okra gumbo, corn muffins and biscuits. The menu changes daily so regulars can have something different every day. Stop by and enjoy the special pleasure of a meal shared with neighbors and strangers.

Colonial Park Cemetery

Colonial Park Cemetery served as Savannah’s cemetery for more than a century and contains over nine thousand graves. Established in 1750, by 1789 it had been expanded three times to reach its current size. Colonial Park Cemetery is approximately 6 acres in size and is located in the heart of Savannah’s Historic District.

Chippewa Square

Chippewa Square is one of the most known squares in all of Savannah, right in the center of everything. There’s a lot to see and do around the square, from plays to beautiful architecture. Be sure to stop by one of the most beloved cafes, which is on Bull Street, just off the south end of the square.

Savannah Bananas

“FANS FIRST ENTERTAINMENT. We are not like your typical baseball team. We are different. We take chances. We toe the line. We test the rules. We challenge the way things are suppose to be.”

River Street

Housed in one-time cotton warehouses, there are more than 75 boutiques, galleries, artists’ studios, restaurants and pubs located on Savannah’s River Street. You could spend an entire day exploring all that River Street has to offer!

Tybee Island

Facing due east, this Georgia barrier island has been a popular vacation spot since the late 1800s. Home to wide, clean beaches with warm and gentle waves, Tybee Island is the perfect escape for those who need a healthy dose of sand, sun and seaside bliss.
